IS MARRIAGE WHAT BLACK WOMEN WANT?
On March 26, 2006, there was an article printed in the Washington Post entitled “Marriage is for White People.” The author, Joy Jones, told the story of some of her African-American, sixth-grade pupils who informed her that parenting was a far more important goal in their lives than marriage because, in their opinion, marriage was an institution to which only white people subscribed. TEN THINGS YOU CAN DO TO IMPROVE YOUR CHANCES OF FINDING THE RIGHT PERSON Think about any and all past friendships and relationships and write a list of everything you liked and disliked about each person. Transform the dislikes on the list to positive qualities. Then cross out everything from that list that you don't offer to someone. And be honest! FINDING "MS. RIGHT"
As I work with professional men of color, the one thing that strikes me is how uneasy they seem when discussing their desire to have a partner. Today's professional men of color have had to defy odds their entire lives. Most of them are financially and professionally better off than their parents and grandparents—they are rising stars in their individual career paths. Yet, many of these men, although very capable of finding dates, have been unable to complete their personal goal of marrying and starting a family. Either, they have delayed it for career-related reasons, they've not been attracting the kind of women they would like to see by their side or they have failed to succeed at relationships in the past. For many professional men of color, admitting that their personal lives are not completely fulfilling is extremely difficult. |
